Nightfall 2023, Play Among the Stars

Stellar Projects presented – Nightfall 2023: Play Among the Stars!

Families and friends, came out to play with the stars in Stewart Park, Middlesbrough.

Across 5 nights, visitors experienced a family friendly, interactive light art trail of beautiful art works, live music, performance and storytelling.

Nightfall stargazers near & far, were invited on an adventure as magical as a shooting star. A galaxy playground descended from the Middlesbrough night sky, full of hopeful stars bursting to play, dance & fly. And across five nights, a cosmic event for all the family unfolded, revealing enchanting twinkling, shimmering stars and their story untold.

Nightfall was produced by Teesside based Stellar Projects and is made possible thanks to funding and support from Arts Council England, Tees Valley Combined Authority & Middlesbrough Council.

Neon Nostalgia by Vishal Joshi  in collaboration with Middlesbrough residents. Commissioned by Borderlands and funded by Arts Council England, Creative People and Places.

Reminiscing about their own childhood, global majority communities come together on one huge canvas to make marks using paints and chalks. Expressing themselves creatively with words, patterns and drawings to create the underpainting for Vishal Joshi to unify through his own stylised illustrations and paintings. This is a huge collaboration between over a hundred local people and one artist. Watch it come to life under ultraviolet lighting at the old Loggia at Stewart’s Park for this year’s Nightfall Festival.

Huge thanks to the participants from Creative Minds, Ubuntu, Tamil Cultural Society, Bangladeshi Community Group, Newport Community Hub and Breckon Hill Community Hub.

From Text to Trail!

Some trees acquired eyeballs… as visitors approached they heard the voices of the trees: a set of seven poems written and recorded by members of Tees Women Poets. The trees tell us how the world is “connected and small”, how the roots of trees in Middlesbrough cover the globe, and how we might “plant a future for us all”. The eyeballs were created by Designs in Air – a pioneering inflatable design company who create original inflatable sculptures and spectacular installations that have been featured at many major events and exhibitions around the world. Tees Women Poets is a group of writers and performers based across the Tees Valley, Peggy Carl, Ann Cuthbert, Julie Easley, Eithne Longstaff, Kirsten Luckins, Carmen Marcus and Lizzie Lovejoy. Sound recording by Grace Stubbings.

What are our visitors saying?

So enjoy these events. Creative art and poetry to entertain and make us think. It’s important to me that this comes from a local group, showcasing the talents of Teesside. Wonderful experience and disabled friendly too.

Both my children are autistic, and none verbal. Planning days out around Christmas can be difficult as they would struggle meeting Father Christmas for example. However, they love the outdoors and they love all things sensory. It was fulfilling to see both my children happy, relaxed and engaged.

Absolutely loved it as always, it’s become one of our favourite festive nights out. Such a treat to end the trail to then listen to a v excellent Elton John tribute whilst sipping mulled wine

Had such a nice lovely evening, very well planned, car parking excellent, straight in, no queues, the time slots worked great and it was a lovely magical walk round with all the illuminations, great pit stop food and drink area with a great band. Thoroughly recommend!

We went to Stewart Park last night 1st Dec. Never been before, l went with my daughter and two granddaughters and just want to thankyou for such a magical evening. The adults had as much fun as the children, the hardwork that your company did paid off, so well organised, we were just overwhelmed, THANKYOU.
